Suzuki brings quirky e-Survivor and XBee concepts to Tokyo Motor Show

One is an electric off-roader, the other a small urban crossover

At this year's edition of the Tokyo Motor Show (October 27-November 5), Suzuki will bring an armada of concept cars, but we've selected two that are most interesting and have potential relevance outside Japan.

The first one is called e-Survivor, and it's Suzuki's vision of "a future compact SUV toward the next 100 years," according to the automaker. As the name hints, it features electric propulsion, with each wheel housing a motor for a four-wheel-drive setup.

Inspired by iconic Suzuki SUVs such as the Jimny and the Vitara, the e-Survivor features a ladder frame chassis and a lightweight, compact body for enhanced off-road capabilities.

With very short overhangs, no wheel arches, and generous ground clearance, the e-Survivor looks ready to do some serious off-roading. The suspension is visible, as is the cabin through the transparent doors. There's no roof, but the e-Survivor does come with electrically-retractable running boards for easier ingress and egress.

Inside, the study features a full-width head-up display, a screen built-in the steering wheel, as well as another spherical display taking the place of the center console. Don't expect the e-Survivor to go into production, although some parts of it (including design cues) may be used by Suzuki models in the future.

The second concept, called XBee, looks much closer to a production car. It's described as a compact crossover wagon that combines the spaciousness and clever packaging of a small estate model with the go-anywhere capabilities of an SUV.

Suzuki will display three versions of the XBee in Tokyo: the standard one, the XBee Outdoor Adventure, and the XBee Street Adventure. Each features slightly different styling cues and targets different audiences.

No details about the engines are available but don't expect anything other than a small-displacement three- or four-cylinder gasoline engine.

For a more powerful and fun-to-drive Suzuki, look no further than the latest Swift Sport.
