Tuned BMW i8 Dark Knight Sends Us Mixed Messages

Is it a villain or a superhero?

As far as tuning goes, Japan regularly comes up with some of the most striking projects. The BMW i8 styled by Energy Motor Sport clearly bears witness to that.

You may see it as an aggressive overkill, but it's still a soft approach when you realize that Japan is the culture that created the bōsōzoku movement.

Now, the BMW i8 hybrid sports car is already an aggressively looking car (read more about it here), thanks to its layered design, but the boys at Energy Motor Sport (and not only them) managed to boost its visuals. They did that mainly by using a dark color, and dark tattoos, and an equally dark name: "Dark Knight Edition."

The thing is, it looks like a real-life Batmobile now — a vehicle that can be used by Batman at night, and Bruce Wayne during the day — although that would be a bit uncovering. But Energy Motor Sport's i8's "tattoos" hint at the Joker — for example, the hood scoop features a four-of-a-kind Ace suite.

So what is it then? A villain or a superhero? Regardless, Energy Motor Sport does know how to make a statement car, albeit one that's divided in its duality.

Visuals aside, we know nothing about what underneath the multi-layered outfit. The standard i8's hybrid setup comprises a mid-mounted 228 hp (231 PS) 1.5-liter turbocharged unit and a 129 hp (131 hp) electric motor, for a combined output of 357 hp (362 PS) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm). Would a V8-powered i8 make a better superhero/villain car?
