All-New 2017 Mazda CX-5 Debuts in LA with Evolutionary Styling

The second-generation CX-5 crossover gets G-Vectoring Control

Mazda has lifted the veils off the second-generation CX-5 crossover SUV at the Los Angeles Auto Show. A fully redesigned model, the 2017 CX-5 is said to combine driving pleasure and passenger comfort in a new package that takes the KODO—Soul of Motion design theme further.

On the outside, the CX-5 is instantly recognizable as a Mazda SUV, and that's because it combines design cues from the larger CX-9 and smaller CX-3, such as the slim headlights and taillights, the sloping roofline and dynamic treatment of the C-pillar, as well as the larger grille that extends into the headlamps.

Mazda says the new CX-5 has a lower center of gravity than the outgoing model as well as a 10 mm wider front and rear tread. The A-pillars have been repositioned 35 mm rearward, with all these changes resulting in a more dynamic look than its predecessor. A new Soul Red Crystal body color has been introduced specifically for the new CX-5.

Inside, the CX-5 gets a redesigned dashboard that looks similar to other interiors of the most recent Mazda models, featuring a three-spoke steering wheel, push-button start, a 4.6-inch color display in the instrument cluster, and a 7-inch touchscreen display on top of the dashboard. The SUV also packs a 10-spoke Bose premium sound system and Mazda Connect apps. The automaker offers three interior packages, including pure white or black leather, or black fabric.

Mazda says it has improved ergonomics too, with controls and switches placed "where the driver can naturally extend a hand or foot to operate them." Visibility is better at the front thanks to the repositioned A-pillars while the lower beltline improves rearward visibility. The 2017 CX-5's trunk has a capacity of 505 liters, 5 liters more than the current model.

Depending on the market, engine choices include the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 clean diesel engine, and the SKYACTIV-G 2.0 and SKYACTIV-G 2.5 direct-injection gasoline engines. The engines are linked to either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, with Mazda's i-ACTIV AWD system available as an option. Dynamics are enhanced thanks to the standard G-Vectoring Control (GVC) system that adjusts engine torque in response to steering wheel action, improving responsiveness and stability.

The 2017 CX-5 will launch in Japan in February next year before arriving in global markets.
