Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the S-Class Cabriolet, its first open-top flagship four-seater since 1971
Essentially the convertible version of the S-Class Coupe, the new model aims to compete with other luxurious four-seater convertible models such as the Bentley Continental Convertible and Rolls-Royce Dawn.
The sixth and last model of the S-Class family, the S-Class Cabriolet is said to be the world’s most comfortable convertible thanks to features such as the enhanced automatic wind protection system AIRCAP, the AIRSCARF neck-level heating system, the heated armrests, the seat heating for front and rear passengers and the fully automatic intelligent climate control system.
The S-Class Cabriolet’s three-layer acoustic soft top can be opened or closed while on the move up to a speed of 60 km/h (37 mph), with the entire operation taking around 20 seconds. The model is said to have “the quietest interior of any series production car” – quite an interesting statement given that we’re talking about a convertible model. That’s mainly due to the three-layer acoustic soft top which lowers noise levels, as do the double glazing of the windows, the enhanced upholstery matting and the acoustically optimized roof lining.
The S-Class Cabriolet has a Cd value of 0.29, which Mercedes-Benz says it is a new benchmark in this segment.
In the United States, the S-Class Cabriolet will be available in two versions: the S 550 Cabriolet and the S 63 Cabriolet. The former is powered by a 449 hp 4.7-liter biturbo V8 engine, mated to a 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission. The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet, powered by a 5.5-liter biturbo V8 engine producing 577 hp, is capable of sprinting from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 186 mph.
The S-Class Cabriolet will go on sale in the U.S. in late spring 2016.
