The DTM Championship finale at Hockenheim saw the German driver Marco Wittmann securing another driver’s title, so BMW created an M4 Coupe in a special, commemorative edition.
Compared to the standard BMW M4, the DTM Champion Edition has increased power output and torque figures – 500 hp and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft), so a 50-unit increase in both areas. Performance-wise, the special edition can launch to 62 mph from a standstill in just 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h). Naturally, the higher numbers are courtesy of the water injection technology it features (which debuted in the M4 GTS and is expected to be seen all over the BMW M line-up).
Driving dynamics were also enhanced through employing a lightweight philosophy – carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is used for the bonnet, roof and read diffuser. Also, the tailpipes are titanium. The 19” (at the front) and 20” (at the rear) light alloys are fitted with 265 (front) and 285 (rear) Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, while braking power is provided by carbon-ceramic brakes. For the track aficionados, it has 3-way-adjustable suspension (for both rebound and damping).
The austere-looking dark cabin is Alcantara-clad, with bucket seats for the driver and the co-driver, behind which you’ll find a rollover bar replacing the rear bench. Although you have all the hints of a track car until now, you should know you also get amenities such as air-con, adaptive LED headlights (with high-beam assist), or Park Distance Control (PDC).
Only 200 units of this victory-celebrating edition will be made, with a price tag of €148,500 (in Germany).
