Honda Sends Off Current Civic Type R with Black Edition Version

The fourth-generation Civic Type R has all it takes to become a future classic

Just think about it: the Japanese hot hatch has been in production for less than two years, it's the first-ever turbocharged Civic Type R, the most powerful, and it's got great reviews from the automotive media, including from us.

In my view, that's enough to make it a future hit on the used car market and a model worth considering as an investment. Enter the Civic Type R Black Edition, which is an even more rare version available in a production run of just 100 units, the last units to come off the production line. All of them are destined for the United Kingdom, taking the entire UK allocation for the current Civic Type R to just 2,500 units.

With production of current Civic Type R now finished, the Black Edition is the last chance to get a brand new Type R if you're in the UK. As the name suggests, the limited edition model features a black body color with red accents, including the red rear wing end plates, which are exclusive to this model.

The interior is predominantly black as well, with red trim on the steering wheel, dashboard, and seats. As for the powertrain, it carries on unchanged from the standard model. The 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo gasoline engine delivers 306 hp (310 PS) at 6,500 rpm and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque at 2,500 rpm.

Pricing starts at £32,300, the same as the existing GT trim level. Honda's Swindon plant in the UK is now gearing up for the next-generation Civic, which goes on sale in March. The Type R version is expected to arrive in the second half of this year.
