Top 11 Best 2016 Supercars That Blew Our Mind

The dream cars of 2016 are right here

2016 was a nasty year overall, but in automotive terms, it had its fair share of amazing supercars. We made a top 11 with the best of them, just for your pleasure. Some hypercars added, just for fun.

1. McLaren 570GT

Joining the 570S Coupé and 540C Coupé as the third model in the Sports Series family, the McLaren 570GT offers more space for those wanting to drive their family in a supercar (we're kidding, it doesn't). The 570GT features the same 3.8-liter twin turbo V8 engine from the 570S, which delivers 570 PS and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque. Linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the power plant allows the 570GT to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. Just enough to get your kids to school in time.

2. Lamborghini Aventador S

More aerodynamic and aggressive, the updated Aventador S has a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 that produces 740 PS (730 hp) and 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) of torque at 5,500 rpm. The 12-cylinder unit revs up to 8,500 rpm and is linked to the Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) 7-speed shifting system that changes gears in up to 50 milliseconds. The car needs only 2.9 seconds for the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint and has a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph). Sizzling.

3. Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta

The Aperta features a 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V12 unit that works in tandem with a 120 kW electric motor. Total power is 950 hp (963 PS) and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm), enough to propel the LaFerrari Aperta from a standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) in less than three seconds, up to a top speed exceeding 217 mph (350 km/h). But there's more: it needs under seven seconds for the 0-to-120 mph (200 km/h) sprint and less than 15 seconds for the and 0-186 mph (300 km/h) one. Any faster and it would travel in time.

4. Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

While not technically a supercar, ZL1 has specs firmly into supercar territory, and this is exactly the reason why it figures in this list. Its 6.2-liter V8 delivers an impressive 650 hp, and the 2017 ZL1 needs just 3.5 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill. The quarter mile is done in 11.4 secs, and its max speed (not yet announced) should exceed 190 mph (300 km/h). Forget about the regular Camaro; this is a beast on its own.

5. Mercedes-AMG GT R

If it looks like a Mercedes-AMG GT3 racing car, it's because it borrows a lot from it. However, the Mercedes-AMG GT R packs an uprated version of the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 delivering 585 PS (577 hp), an extensively modified suspension, enhanced aerodynamics, and a lighter body (by 15 kg compared to the GT S). All these upgrades contribute to an improved sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 318 km/h (198 mph). Not to mention it looks bonkers in green.

6. Ford GT

The new 2017 Ford GT has a 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine delivering more than 600 hp, a lightweight carbon fiber body, and an extremely aerodynamic shape that allows it to reach supercar-like accelerations. Production will be limited to 1000 units, most of them being already sold. Perhaps one of the most wanted cars on the market right now. More technical details to follow soon, the Americans are tight-lipped.

7. Aston Martin DB11

The new DB11 features a twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter V12 developing 608 HP (447 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm). Its sleek aerodynamic shape allows for a top speed of 322 km/h (200 mph), and the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint requires only 3.9 seconds. Ah, and it looks stunning!

8. Lamborghini Huracan RWD Spyder

Huracan's Spyder derivative features the same powertrain as the Huracan RWD Coupe: a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 gasoline engine mated to the Lamborghini Doppia Frizione (LDF) seven-speed dual clutch transmission with launch control. It delivers 580 PS (572 hp) at 8,000 rpm and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500 rpm. 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) is dispatched in 3.6 seconds, while top speed is 319 km/h (198 mph). Like a Cat 5 hurricane.

9. Kode57

Kode57 is a topless supercar with an aluminum spaceframe, featuring carbon-fiber body panels, a 702-horsepower 6.0-liter V12, custom-made interior and, of course, reverse-opening doors. It's also delivering some impressing speed figures: 3.4 seconds for the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint. At around $25 million a piece, all five units are probably already sold.

10. Bugatti Chiron

Bugatti's Chiron hypercar is named after the ’20s and ‘30s Grand Prix driver Louis Chiron. The 8.0-liter W16 quad-turbocharged engine now boasts 1,479 hp and 1,179lb-ft, driven to all four wheels via the reworked 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Price tag? €2.4 million ($2.49 mil). Chiron does 0 to 62 mph in less than 2.5 seconds; 0-124 mph in under 6.5 seconds and 0-186 mph below 13.6 secs. Also, it's the first hypercar you can actually drift by just touching a button.

11. NextEV Nio EP9

NextEV's EP9 hypercar is the world's fastest electric car and managed to complete the Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 7 minutes and 5.12 seconds. Animated by four electric motors kept in check by four individual gearboxes, it delivers 1 MegaWatt of power or 1,360 PS (1,341 hp). The figures above account for a 0 to 220 km/h (137 mph) sprint done in 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 313 km/h (195 mph). The future is electric, it seems.
