Cadillac is one of the oldest car brands in the world. The company came into existence back in 1902 and it was named after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who founded the city of Detroit, Michigan. Although the brands’ history is closely linked to the fortunes of General Motors, which has bought it in 1909, the story of its birth is actually linked to GM's arch rival, Henry Ford.

In March 1902, Ford left the company he founded following a dispute with his financial backers, William Murphy and Lemuel Bowen. The Henry Ford Company reorganized that year as Cadillac.

By the time GM bought Cadillac, it was already an established as a premium car manufacturer. It has continued this tradition ever since. During the 1950s and 60s, Cadillac became synonymous with the idea of American luxury, as its cars were lavishly equipped and featured large engines and an abundance of chrome.

Despite its affluent customer base, the downsizing trend was unavoidable after the oil crisis of 1973. During the 80s and 90s the brand's reputation was affected by GM's decision to use as many common parts with its other less prestigious brands. By the late 90s however, Cadillac was going through a revival period and its first SUV, the posh Escalade was introduced.

At present, Cadillac is a brand tailored mainly towards the US, Canadian and Chinese markets, where the bulk of the sales is made. In 2016, Cadillac sold a little over 170.000 units worldwide. The current lineup is made up of sedans, compact and large Sport Utility Vehicles.
