The car producer founded by Frenchman André-Gustave Citroën in 1919 was considered throughout the 20th century one of the most innovative regarding technology and design.

After all, who could forget the legendary DS limousine that made history in the 50s and 60s thanks to its futuristic design and hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension? But let's not ignore earlier models such as Traction Avant which, in 1934, was the world's first mass-produced front-wheel drive car, and also one of the first cars to feature a unitary-type body, with no chassis frame holding the mechanical components.

Since 1976, Citroën has been part of the PSA group, alongside Peugeot. The French brand also has quite a reputation in motorsport, having won the World Rally Championship (WRC) five times. Also, Citroën is the only automobile manufacturer to have won three different official championships from the International Automobile Federation: the WRC,  the World Rally Championship, and the World Touring Car Championship.

The French car producer has been one of the first Western manufacturers to see the potential of the Chinese market. It has sold vehicles there since 1984. Now Citroën is a well-established name in China thanks to its Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroën joint venture.

In 2014, when PSA ran into severe financial difficulties, the Dongfeng Motor Corporation took an ownership stake. Recently there has been information regarding the possible acquisition of Opel, a European subsidiary of General Motor, by PSA.
