The Korean brand with a weird name had a lot of ups and downs. Today, SsangYong is a subsidiary of Mahindra&Mahindra, the Indian Car Company.
SsangYong was initially established as Ha Dong-Hwan Motor workshop in 1954. The company initially started producing trucks, buses, and special purpose vehicles many of them for export.
In 1977 the company, known at the time as Ha Dong-Hwan Motor Co changed its name to Dong A Motor Co Ltd. Later, in 1984, SsangYong took over Geohwa Co and took over the name Korando, a contraction of the motto "Korean Can Do".
The actual SsangYong name was used from 1986 when the SsangYong Group acquired the company. From 1991, a partnership with Mercedes-Benz was signed and the SsangYong models were developed using Mercedes-Benz technology. The first model using German technology was the Musso SUV launched in 1993. In 1997, Korean Group Daewoo buys a majority stake in SsangYong.
The brand changed owners again in 2004, when SsangYong merged with Chinese Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC). 2004 also saw the company launch a large 7 seat MPV for the first time with Rodius.
After disappearing for a few years for the market, SsangYong returned in 2011 after Mumbai-based Mahindra Motor Co, India's largest maker of utility vehicles acquired the Korean brand.
In 2015, SsangYong entered the compact crossover market with the launch of the Tivoli. Engineered in conjunction with Mahindra and powered by an all-new SsangYong 1.6L engine, Tivoli is the basis for SsangYong's future.
