2017 Chevrolet Colorado Gets All-New 3.6L V6, 8-Speed Auto

It’s the same engine-transmission combo recently introduced on the 2017 GMC Canyon

Just like its GMC Canyon sibling, the Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck gets a new V6 engine and automatic transmission for the 2017 model year.

Although it retains the 3.6-liter displacement, the V6 engine is all new, featuring the second generation of Chevrolet's double-overhead-cam engine architecture with an updated suite of advanced engine technologies.

Among the new technologies, there's variable valve timing for intake and exhaust, improved direct injection and, for the first time, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation). The latter disables two cylinders under light throttle applications for increased fuel economy.

Compared to its predecessor, the all-new 3.6-liter engine is slightly more powerful, delivering 308 hp at 6,800 rpm and 275 lb-ft (373 Nm) of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The V6 unit works with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, the GM-developed Hydra-Matic 8L45. Roughly the same size and weight as the 6L80 six-speed automatic it replaces, the new gearbox offers a wider 7.0 overall gear ratio spread than the 6L80 transmission's 6.0 ratio.

As a result, the first gear ratio is numerically higher, helping drivers start off easier with a heavy load or when trailering, while the numerically lower rear axle ratios reduce engine rpm on the highway for improved efficiency.

The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado will arrive at dealerships in the fourth quarter of this year.
