2017 Roush P-51 Mustang debuts with 727 horsepower, bags of charm

Name inspired by iconic fighter plane, acceleration probably similar too

Almost ten years passed from the release of Roush Performance's first P-51 Mustang and a follow-up model based on the latest-generation Ford pony car.

The 2017 P-51 Mustang is Roush's most powerful model ever made, courtesy of "Coyote" 5.0-liter V8 engine that is boosted to 727 hp by a 2.3-liter Eaton TVS supercharger. The engine can be mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, with the manual option also adding PFC two-piece rotors and updated friction pads.

Besides the remarkable power, the 2017 P-51 Mustang features Roush TrakPak components including a 3-way adjustable coil-over suspension and lightweight black forged wheels by Weld shod with Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires (295/35ZR19).

The souped-up Mustang also sports the Roush Active Exhaust System with black coated tips that offers the driver the choice of three distinct preloaded exhaust sound profiles, as well as a "Custom" setting.

Styling-wise, the 2017 P-51 Mustang boasts many of the styling cues of Roush's current lineup of Mustangs. However, it gets exclusive new carbon fiber bits such as the rear deck lid spoiler and the front splitter with support brackets, as well as a unique custom paint on the hood, front grille ambient lighting, and custom badging.

Inside, the P-51 combines custom P-51 Amaretto Tuscany leather seating with matching leather door inserts, as well as exclusive details such as a P-51 gauge logo, red Roush shifter ball, Roush Performance pedals, and a P-51 interior plaque.

If everything you've read and seen here caught your attention, you should know Roush will only build 51 units of the latest P-51 Mustang, each priced $42,500 above the price of the base 2017 Mustang GT — that's about $77,000 if you don't already have the donor car.

Still not convinced? Roush offers a full factory, 3-year/36,000-mile warranty for the P-51 Mustang.
