Gone are the days of the Mitsubishi Eclipse sports car courtesy of yours truly the SUV, but the nameplate lives on in the US (and Europe) under the new 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

The first batch of Eclipse Cross units has reached US shores and Mitsubishi tells us the CUV (Compact Utility Vehicle) has a starting price of $23,295 in the US of A, where you can only have it with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. Sales kick off in March.

The gasoline engine makes 152 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque and employs sodium-filled exhaust valves for better efficiency, says the Japanese carmaker. A CVT transmission redirects power to the front wheels on the base model or to all four corners on every other version.

Europe, on the other hand, gets the option of a 2.2-liter diesel but also retains the 1.5-liter mill.

Amenity-wise, the new Eclipse Cross offers a power-sliding panoramic, 7-inch infotainment system, head-up display and heated rear seats. On the safety front, customers get forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and auto high beam.
