Toyota has once again elevated its legendary Hilux lineup with the introduction of the Hilux GR SPORT II, a model that combines rugged performance with refined engineering. Building on its Dakar Rally-winning heritage, this pickup is designed to deliver superior handling, off-road prowess, and a bold aesthetic that stands out in any terrain.
Powertrain and Performance
At the heart of the Hilux GR SPORT II lies the proven 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine, delivering an impressive 204 horsepower (DIN) and 500 Nm of torque. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, this powertrain ensures robust performance across challenging terrains and everyday driving conditions. The model maintains its best-in-class towing capacity of 3,500 kg and a payload of 1,000 kg, making it an ideal choice for both adventure enthusiasts and work-focused drivers.
Enhanced Chassis and Suspension
Toyota has significantly upgraded the chassis engineering of the Hilux GR SPORT II to improve stability and handling. The front and rear tracks have been widened by 140 mm and 155 mm respectively, while the ride height has been raised by 20 mm. These changes enhance off-road capabilities by increasing the approach angle from 29 to 30 degrees.
The suspension system has been overhauled with monotube dampers featuring large-diameter pistons for faster response in demanding conditions. Additionally, lightweight tubular anti-roll bars and repositioned spring/damper assemblies contribute to a smoother ride. At the rear, new square cross-section axles and repositioned dampers further enhance stability.
Aerodynamics and Braking
Aerodynamic efficiency is achieved through innovative design elements such as a new front air curtain structure, fog lamp bezels, wide over-fenders, sports bar, deck cover, and alloy wheels. These features reduce drag while maintaining the vehicle’s rugged styling.
Braking performance has also been upgraded with larger front discs and new rear disc brakes replacing the previous drum setup. These improvements ensure superior stopping power in all conditions.
Exterior Design
The Hilux GR SPORT II boasts an assertive design that reflects its sporty DNA. Key exterior features include:
- Black G-mesh grille with classic TOYOTA lettering
- Red coil springs and dampers
- Red brake calipers paired with lightweight 17-inch black alloy wheels
- Black detailing on mirrors, side steps, door handles, sport bar, and rear bumper
- Silver front under-run protections
These elements combine to create a striking visual presence while contributing to aerodynamic efficiency.
Interior Features
Inside, the GR SPORT II continues its motorsport-inspired theme with a monochrome black design accented by bold red details. Highlights include:
- Black synthetic suede and leather sports seats with silver stitching
- Red seatbelts and paddle shifters
- Aluminium pedals for enhanced driver engagement
- GR Sport branding on instrumentation
The cabin is designed to provide comfort during high lateral forces while maintaining a premium feel.

Technology Integration
The Toyota Smart Connect+ multimedia system is standard in the GR SPORT II. Accessible via an eight-inch touchscreen display or voice commands, it offers cloud-based navigation with real-time traffic updates as well as offline functionality. Smartphone integration is seamless through Apple CarPlay® (wireless) or Android Auto® (wired).
Software updates are delivered over-the-air via the car’s data communications module (DCM), ensuring that both multimedia systems and Toyota Safety Sense features remain up-to-date without requiring workshop visits.

The Toyota Hilux GR SPORT II sets a new benchmark for performance pickups by combining advanced engineering with striking design elements. Whether tackling rough terrain or cruising city streets, this model delivers unmatched reliability, comfort, and style. With sales already underway in select markets since late 2024, Toyota continues to solidify its reputation as a leader in durable yet dynamic vehicles.
