All-New McLaren Super Series Confirmed for Geneva Motor Show

It will be the first-ever second-generation McLaren road car

McLaren has announced it will launch the second-generation of its core Super Series model at the Geneva Motor Show on March 7.

The second iteration of the Super Series is McLaren's first-ever replacement of a product family and the first of the 15 new cars promised in the company's Track22 Business Plan. The new Super Series supercar will have at its core the new carbon fiber Monocage II body structure (pictured), which is said to deliver "extreme strength" and contribute to the car's light weight.

How light? McLaren says the car will tip the scales at just 1,283 kg (2,828.5 lb), making it 18 kg (39.7 lb) lighter than the current 650S. The young supercar manufacturer also claims the forthcoming Super Series will be lighter than the closest competitor too, although it doesn't name that car.

Besides helping reduce weight, Monocage II also allows a wider cabin entrance and lower sills for improved access and better visibility. The new chassis is said to contribute to a lower center of gravity, which will have a positive impact on the dynamic performance. On a side note, customers will be able to specify a "Visible Monocage" option that exposes the carbon fiber on the inside area of the A-pillar.

These are all the details we have so far, but McLaren will release more information and photos in March. The Super Series debuted in 2011 with the 12C, followed by the 12C Spider a year later. In 2014, McLaren introduced the 650S Coupé and 650S Spider, with the limited edition 675LT Coupé and 675LT Spider completing the range in 2015.
