Are You Ready for the First Bentley Diesel?

Bentayga will soon feature VW’s monster diesel unit

Since Audi hit the spotlights with its SQ7 super-diesel, we've been wondering if this engine will also land in Bentley's yard. It seems it will, as Bentley was spotted testing around in TDI guise, motor1 shows.

The unit under SQ7's massive bonnet is a 4.0-liter V8 featuring an electrically powered compressor – making the turbo lag "history". It develops 435 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque from 1,000 rpm (again, thanks to that wonderful EPC).

Despite its 5,136 pounds (2,330 kilograms), SQ7 TDI can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.8 seconds, up to an electronically governed speed of 155 mph. Oh, and when not in full throttle mode, it can boast impressive fuel efficiency figures: 31.8 mpg and 312.2 g/mi CO2 emissions.

We can't say for sure if Bentley would squeeze even more power from this mighty V8, but we wouldn’t be so surprised if it does. Also, expect the diesel Bentayga not to have an electronically-limited top speed.

It's Bentley’s first diesel engine, so they will probably want to drown this particular fact in stupidly large numbers.
