Audi Mulling BMW i8-Rivaling Electrified Sports Car

It’s the second of a three-car-strong electric offensive also including an SUV and a compact hatch

The BMW i8 has carved its own electrified sports car niche, a niche Audi now wants a piece of as well. According to a report on AutoExpress, the i8 rival will be one of three new electric or electrified models pegged for launch by 2020.

No details whatsoever were shared regarding any specifics surrounding the model, but it will be the second of the three announced models to arrive. The first two electric or electrified models to arrive will an SUV, while the last is going to be a compact hatch – the first was previewed by the Q6 concept, while the latter is expected to be similar to VW’s I.D. concept.

The source quotes Rupert Stadler, the CEO of Audi, as saying “There is first of all an SUV. We decided to go the SUV way because, even though the architecture is a little more difficult because you don’t have the perfect aerodynamics, people love to sit in an SUV and we have to respect the growing trend of SUV segments. I think this was two or three years ago absolutely the right decision.”

This report reinterprets information provided previously – the older report stated that one model was going to be a Mercedes S-Class coupe rival and now that model is apparently replaced by the i8 rival.
