BMW plans to revive the 8 Series in 2020

BMW wants to bring back the much appreciated 8 Series as the brand’s new technological flagship.

The Bavarian car maker wants to bring back the much appreciated 8 Series as the brand’s new technological flagship. Such an important move is not going to be made lighthearted, so we’ll just have to wait for some time.

The 8 Series is known is BMW history as an ahead-of-its-time flagship model, one that impressed through technological solutions and opulence also.

Drive-by-wire acceleration, multi-link rear axle, Active Rear-Axle Kinematics rear-axle steering — those were features the 8 Series boasted, along a porno chic design and satisfyingly potent engines.

Unfortunately, such masterpiece could not be affordable, and a North American market trying to recover after the 1987 recession was not ready for the Mighty Eight.

Now, time for some great news. Albeit it’s kept under high secrecy, the German manufacturer has a plan for reiterating the 8 Series. As before, it is going to be the family’s flagship, only, this time, it will have more than one body version.

The future 8 — planned for 2020, apparently — will have a coupé/convertible body and a four-door coupé version. Basically, it’ll be “similar in concept to the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé only bigger and nobler in appearance”.

Although there are no official sketches with the future 8 Series, it is safe to say will be inspired by the Gran Lusso concept previewed in 2013.
