Todd Hazelwood crash V8 Supercars

Fortunately, everybody survived, but the damage is impressive

In Australian motorsport, Sandown Raceway’s turn six is considered one of the most dangerous, and for good reason.

V8 Supercars star Todd Hazelwood had a massive crash during the first qualifying race for the Sandown 500, the first of three endurance events in the Supercars championship.

“When you’re going at 260 kilometers an hour (162mph) and you get a whack like that you’re just a passenger,” Todd later said, after walking away from the crash with no injuries. During the race, Todd (who is 21 years old), was fighting for a position with Jono Webb and David Russell. A fraction of a second later, Todd was then pushed into the wall.

The violence of the impact was so severe it sent Todd’s Commodore up into the air, and into a set of spins with such force that body panels flew off the chassis, which held up much better, saving the driver's life.
