Facelifted 2018 VW Golf Sportsvan gets a styling and technology makeover

It will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month

It's mid-cycle makeover time for the VW Golf Sportsvan, only three years after its debut.

The roomier, more pragmatic variant of the Golf doesn't change dramatically, however. Most changes occur at the front, where the Sportsvan gains a new bumper and standard halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights, while optional extras include full-led headlights instead of the previously-available xenon units.

At the rear, standard LED taillights and a refreshed bumper complete the changes. The facelifted Golf Sportsvan also gets five new alloy wheel types (16-, 17-, and 18-inch), as well as new colors such as Cranberry Red.

That's all that changes on the outside, while interior design changes bring new decorative trim, fabrics, and leather seats.

Technology updates are more significant, with highlights such as the Discover Pro radio navigation system with a 9.2-inch display and gesture control, as well as the Media Control app which allows users to control many of the functions of the infotainment system from a tablet or smartphone.

The facelifted Golf Sportsvan also gets new driver assistance systems, such as Pedestrian Monitoring, Traffic Jam Assist, Emergency Assist, the latest generation Park Assist, as well as Trailer Assist.

Volkswagen offers three TSI gasoline engines and two TDI diesels units on the refreshed Golf Sportsvan. The more powerful four-cylinder TSI units also come with Active Cylinder Management.

Advanced sales of the updated Golf Sportsvan begin this autumn in Germany.

Unless you desperately need the extra headroom and flexibility of the Golf Sportsvan, we reckon you'd be better off with a regular Golf.
