Fiat-Chrysler Issues Recall for Glitchy ZF Nine-Speed Automatic Transmission

Some 505,000 vehicles from different manufacturers are affected

The ZF-made nine-speed automatic transmission used by manufacturers like Fiat-Chrysler (FCA), Honda or Land Rover has been plagued with problems ever since it was introduced. Now vehicles using it are finally being recalled, and that amounts to around 505,000 units.

FCA vehicles make up the bulk of the recall; more specifically, the 2015 Chrysler 200, Ram Promaster City, Jeep Renegade and Cherokee account for nearly 325,000 of all recalled vehicles.

Other affected models from other manufacturers are Land Rover’s Evoque and Range Rover Sport, as well as the Honda Pilot and Acura TLX.

The problem that prompted the recall has to do with the transmission shifting into neutral for no real reason. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (or NHTSA) says that when the neutral shifting occurs, “there is an increased risk of a crash.”
