Fiat Tipo S-Design range-topper brings more style and equipment to the table

The budget model looks slightly more upscale with this update but becomes pricey

The Fiat Tipo designates a budget-oriented family of compact cars, available in three body styles: five-door hatchback, sedan, and wagon.

Style and luxury are not usually associated with the Tipo, but with the latest S-Design top-of-the-line trim, Fiat is trying to move its compact models upscale a bit. First used on the Fiat 500X, the S-Design grade brings both styling and equipment updates for the Tipo hatchback and wagon.

Highlights include a new Metropoli Grey livery (only for S-Design models), exclusive 18-inch alloys, Bi-Xenon headlights (a first for the Tipo), as well as Piano Black elements (the grille, mirror caps, and air intake frames). The tinted rear windows, smoked light units, and door handles in matching body color round off the exterior modifications.

Inside, the Tipo S-Design brings seats upholstered in leather and Airtex fabric, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift lever, as well as Piano Black accents. When it comes to equipment, the S-Design trim gets the latest UConnect 7-inch HD Live infotainment system with UConnect Link, Apple Car Play, and Android Auto as standard.

Fiat Tipo S-Design models are available with any of the engine choices offered on the regular Tipo: a 120-hp 1.4-liter T-Jet turbocharged gasoline unit (also available as a bi-fuel LPG-gasoline engine), and a 120-hp 1.6-liter MultiJet turbodiesel. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. Prices in Italy start from €19,840 for the hatchback and €21,240 for the wagon.
