Ford claims 2018 Expedition FX4 is more capable off-road than any other Expedition, past or present

The FX4 Off-Road Package gives the big SUV added ruggedness

Say hello to the 2018 Ford Expedition FX4, which comes kitted with goodies meant to enhance its off-road capabilities.

Ford says more than 20 percent of Expedition owners use their SUV for off-road adventure, which is why it has designed the FX4 Off-Road Package for its biggest SUV.

Since the pack is said to turn the SUV into "the most off-road-capable Expedition ever," let's see what it brings to the table. First of all, Ford has fitted an electronic limited-slip rear differential to help off-road performance in low-traction situations. Its job is to vary torque side-to-side, to the wheels that need extra traction, but the LSD is also said to improve towing performance and capability thanks to the 3.73:1 gearing.

The FX4 pack also includes off-road-tuned shocks that are more stiffly tuned to keep wheels in contact with the road. All-terrain tires with thicker sidewalls are also fitted, as are seven different skid plates that serve as underbody armor.

Other features included in the FX4 Off-Road Package are the unique 18-inch cast-aluminum wheels painted Magnetic Metallic, chrome running boards, FX4 badging, and new rubber floor liners.

Obviously, the 2018 Ford Expedition FX4 also comes with the Terrain Management System that offers seven special drive modes that help the SUV adapt to different road conditions. Normal mode is for driving around town, Sport for more spirited trips, Tow/Haul for improved towing and hauling performance, Eco for improved fuel economy, Grass/Gravel/Snow for loose terrain, Sand for low traction situations, and Mud/Rut for uneven surfaces.

Drivers can also manually select either 2WD or 4WD modes in a given drive mode, depending on their preferences and terrain.

The 2018 Expedition FX4 goes on sale this fall along with the rest of the 2018 Expedition lineup and is equipped with the 375 hp 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
