Ford talks about using bamboo in car construction

It sounds like it’s planning on using the material for more than just interior decoration

While some manufacturers, like BMW, are already using bamboo to beautify their car interiors (so far only in the i3, pictured below), others are announcing bigger plans with it. Ford, for instance, seems to want to use as much of it as possible in its car interiors and has just published a video explaining its advantages.

Janet Yin, a materials engineering supervisor at Ford’s Nanjing Research & Engineering Centre, said “Bamboo is amazing. It’s strong, flexible, totally renewable, and plentiful in China and many other parts of Asia.”

Ford argues its use in construction has several benefits, the most important of which being its tensile strength and rapid rate of growth. On top of that, the team tasked with testing bamboo for automotive use “has found that bamboo performs comprehensively better than other tested synthetic and natural fibers in a range of materials tests, from tensile strength tests to impact strength tests. It’s also been heated to more than 212 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure it can maintain its integrity.”

To us it sounds all nice and sustainable and on top of that it can be used in place of conventional decorative wood trim.
