Honda Will Expand Clarity Family with Plug-In Hybrid, All-Electric Versions

Both new versions will debut at the 2017 New York Auto Show

In a move that reminds of Hyundai's Ioniq family of eco-conscious models, Honda has announced that it will add two new electric powertrain options to the Clarity Fuel Cell.

Debuting at the New York Auto Show, the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid and the Clarity Electric will make Clarity the first vehicle series to offer an array of electrified vehicle choices, with fuel cell, battery electric, and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Details about the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid and the Clarity Electric are scarce for the moment, but Honda says the PHEV model will have an all-electric driving range that exceeds 40 miles (65 km) and a "hyper-efficient gasoline-hybrid extended range mode." It will also be available in all 50 states.

As for the Clarity Electric, Honda says it will be "the first affordable, midsize, five-passenger battery electric vehicle (BEV)." We think Tesla may have a thing or two to say about that.

Each Clarity variant will feature distinctive design features, but all are based on the same low, wide, and aerodynamic bodywork. Honda says each model offers roomy interiors with five seats and "premium, environmentally-responsible materials."

Honda Clarity models are also said to offer "fun-to-drive" DNA, with great dynamic handling plus "seamless electric drive torque and acceleration." As for equipment, the Clarity will feature technologies including Display Audio with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as a series of standard Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistive technologies.

The Clarity family plays a major role in Honda's plan to make two-thirds of its global auto sales from electrified vehicles by 2030.
