The Italian Carabinieri have taken delivery of a modified Jeep Wrangler JK that will be used to patrol the beaches of Romagna this summer.

The off-roader will do surveillance work on the Romagna Riviera, which is made up of 30 km (18.6 miles) of beach between Cattolica and Bellaria that includes the resorts of Rimini and Riccione.

It will be the first time such an operation designed to protect residents and holiday makers during the busy summer season will take place in Italy.

The Wrangler handed over to the Carabinieri is a previous-generation JK model powered by a 2.8-liter CRD turbodiesel engine linked to an automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels via a 4WD system. In standard specification, the unit delivers 200 metric horsepower (197 bhp) and 460 Nm (339 lb-ft) of torque.

The vehicle comes equipped with the high-performance Mopar One Pack designed to enhance the Wrangler’s off-road capabilities. It includes a 2-inch lift kit by Fox Performance, front steering stabilizer, 17-inch x 8.5-inch Performance Gladiator black alloy rims shod with extra-large 32-inch all-terrain tires, front and rear moulded splash guards and side mudguard extensions.

Obviously, the off-roader has also been fitted with specific Carabinieri features such as a flashing light, siren with telescopic mounting, machine gun holder (!), two signaling disc holders, and a portable radio. Rounding off the changes is the Carabinieri's iconic dark blue livery with white and red accents. We guess the Carabinieri risked missing the summer season had they waited for the all-new Jeep Wrangler JL and that's why they went for the JK model.
