Matthew McConaughey Goes Full Schizo in Latest Lincoln Commercial

Matthew the Driver meets Matthew the Boss

They say there is no such thing as bad press. Given its latest creations, this might be the Lincoln marketing department’s motto.

Because it just created another commercial featuring cool Matthew McConaughey acting cool. We still can't tell if these are hints of auto-irony regarding the automotive commercials, or it's just plain Lincoln proudness. They are stupid and we love them.

It goes like this: McConaughey is standing on water, like in those awkward, reality-defying dreams we have from time to time. Always.

“You might never just stand there, looking at it,” he says.

"This is cool," you’d say; like we did." He’s Matthew, talking nonsense with his grave, cool voice. It's perfect!

"I mean, you may never even sit in the back seat," he continues while finding himself behind the wheel.

"That’d be a shame," he concludes, making himself cozy in the rear seat. Wait, what?

So, he’s talking to himself now? Not as in thinking out loud, but rather talking with his boss version. But wait, it gets even weirder. Both McConaugheys make eye contact and start laughing. We’re confused.

The imagery is nothing but awesome. The clip is signed by The Dark Knight cinematographer Wally Pfister and was shot on a glacial plain in Iceland. So no CGI artifice here. The only problem is that there’s too much McConaughey for one short clip. Or, better said, too many. Otherwise, it’s good material for a Saturday Night Live spoof.
