Mercedes-Benz Launches Croove, a Private Ride-Sharing Program on BMW’s Turf

Of course, it’s a smartphone-base platform

Looking to expand the mobility horizon in Germany, Mercedes-Benz introduces Croove, a car-sharing service that will be using premium vehicles.

The initiative that kicked off in Munich allows private owners to share their car and, according to Mercedes, is a win-win situation as both parties benefit.

"On average, a car is parked up for 23 hours a day. Why not make it earn a little money during this time? Car-sharing will be a key element of the mobility concept in tomorrow's cities."

Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars

Mercedes thinks that owners who rent their vehicles will "optimize their car's rate of usage" and will earn some money on the side. Conversely, those who hire a particular car will be given a money-saving alternative to conventional car rental companies.

Naturally, all happens under a set of conditions. For example, Croove can be used for any brand and model, but the cars must be at least 15-year old and in good trim.

Furthermore, hirers must be at least 21 and hold a valid driver's license. Owners create an online profile with the vehicle's details (make, model, specs, and even optional equipment) and their asking fee.

Browsing through offers is done via the Croove app which will initially be available in the Apple iTunes store, but an Android version is also on its way. The app also allows the two parties to rate each other.
