Mercedes to launch compact EV under EQ brand in Frankfurt

Production model slated for 2020

Mercedes-Benz's EQ arm is gaining momentum if we are to believe the latest rumors which claim the German carmaker will launch an electric hatchback under the EQ brand.

The unveiling is supposed to happen later this year at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, according to Autocar.

What's more, the concept forecast a road-going car that would slot in the entry-level EQ A segment and go on sale in 2020.

The same media outlet reports that this EQ A model will become "a central pillar in Mercedes-Benz’s bid to become an electric car leader within the next decade" and rival the likes of Volkswagen I.D. and BMW i3.

Moreover, the new model could also serve the eco-mobility purpose, as Mercedes-Benz is looking to expand its car2go initiative worldwide.

Just like the EQ SUV concept, it will sit on MB's new MEA (new modular electric architecture) platform, which can also underpin sedans and coupés if needed.
