Launch is due later this year

SEAT's third SUV will wear the Tarraco moniker, as decided by over 140,000 people surveyed by the carmaker.

The people have spoken: SEAT Tarraco will debut in late 2018 to join the likes of Arona and Ateca. Tarraco is the old name of Tarragona, a Spanish city located in Catalonia, the oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula.

Other variants were Alboran, Aranda, and Avila, but apparently, they didn't possess enough appeal to convince the voting fans.

Cultural info aside, the new SEAT Tarraco will host up to seven passengers and go head-to-head against the likes of Nissan X-Trail, Renault Koleos, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Tiguan Allspace and Skoda Kodiak in the large SUV segment in Europe.

So far there's no word on size and specs, but the Tarraco is likely to embrace the same VW MQB platform that's underpinning a plethora of models throughout the Group's portfolio.

We can also expect an assortment of petrol and diesel engines under the TSI and TDI nameplates and perhaps some sort of electrified variant further down Tarraco's career path. A six-speed manual and the DSG transmission are also on the table, joined by VW's 4×4 setup.

We'll get back on the topic as soon as more info surfaces.
