New versus old BMW M550d side by side sprint

550d

It’s four turbos against three

BMW M550d xDrive is one of the maddest diesel performance vehicles you can get right now and the latest version is noticeably quicker than the one it replaced.

The model was perviously offered with a three-turbo version of its three-liter straight-six diesel, putting out 381 PS /740 Nm. The latest one has gained an additional turbocharger bumping power up to 400 PS and torque to 760 Nm.

This cuts the naught to 100 km/h sprint time from 4.7 to 4.4 seconds, but the difference it makes in actual acceleration all the way to the vehicle’s top speed is really quite noticeable, as you’ll see in this video by AutoTopNL.

We recently sampled BMW’s most powerful diesel in the mighty X6 M50d when we towed a skier up a slope where the big oil burner came in really handy. From the diesel 5-Series range we only drove the 530d, which as you can see from this other side by side sprint video showing the entire diesel 5-Series lineup, it's among the slower ones.
