Rolls-Royce Cullinan Shows SUVesque Body During Pre-Production Testing

Trial phase is just beginning

Partially teased by Rolls-Royce last week, the so-called Project Cullinan couldn't shake off our spy photographers.

Few details are known about Rolls-Royce's first-ever SUV, although RR officials have been throwing arrows at Bentley, claiming "the Bentayga SUV is clearly number two."

Of course, they also claim the upcoming Cullinan will be an "authentic" Rolls-Royce – despite joining the Quasimodo-shaped car clique, so take their bragging with a pinch of salt.

What we know about the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is that beneath it sits an aluminum space-frame platform which is going to fit below all RR's models built after 2018.

Nonetheless, Rolls-Royce plans to sell 2,000 Cullinans per year. Before that happens, the lavish SUV will head to the Arctic Circle for cold-weather testing and then off to the Middle East, for a rendez-vous with the scorching elements.

The most likely powertrain choice lives in the 6.6-liter twin-turbo V12 found inside the Ghost but tweaked to fit the purpose and power demands of a larger and therefore heavier SUV.
