Saudi Arabia will allow women to drive

Welcome to the 20th century, Saudi Arabia!

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced that it will lift a ban on driving for women. Starting June next year, women will finally be able to get behind the wheel.

The move comes amid a series of reforms aimed at improving the image and economy of the world's second-largest oil producer in the world.

Women in Saudi Arabia will not have to rely on taxi drivers or male family members to get around. The ban was lifted by a royal decree of King Salman that was read aloud on state television. The state will start issuing drivers licenses to men and women. There will also be changes in the police force, as the police officers will need special training on how to interact with female drivers, something that might be problematic in a country ruled by Sharia law.

In the Kingdom, there are still in force guardianship laws that give men a lot of control over a woman's life, so it remains unclear if a woman will be able to get a driver's license without a consent from her husband or a male family member.
