So How Does the 2017 G30 BMW 5 Series Square Up Against the Mercedes E-Class?

Let’s briefly talk about the aces up their respective sleeves

The unsynchronized wrestling match between two of the most important German cars got us thinking of a Golden Retriever chasing the magical yellow ball. When a new generation E-Class launches, the BMW’s Fiver looks a bit old, hence the greater contrast. And, of course, vice-versa – Audi is so constant in its appearance and that gives the impression it’s always new, yet old at the same time.

So now it’s time for the 2017 G30 BMW 5 Series to throw the gauntlet at the recently launched W213 E-Class which still looks pretty contemporary (despite its specific aging-prone dramatic design). As a matter of fact, we did a brief design comparison between the two, if you want to get into specifics.

Although the two luxury sedans are in the same class, there are specific USPs when it comes to a comparison, design aside. So what’s new for the 2017 G30 5 Series then?

Well, it borrows the Seven’s Gesture Control – a wonderful, although a bit useless feature which enables communicating with the car through a gesture-reading software – and it boasts the new touchscreen-compatible iDrive infotainment system. All in all, the Five has more tech that the E-Class; oh, and the BMW can be parked remotely.

Regarding underpinning spec sheet, the 5 Series features an all-wheel-steering system – that can be fitted to all-wheel-drive xDrive models also. Naturally, it is expected to drive better (read: with more aplomb) than the E-Class. The Mercedes, on the other side, can be fitted with the Airmatic air suspension system (on both axles), a unique offering in this segment.

Once again, there’s enough proof to state the two arch-rivals have quite different approaches when it comes to reflecting the best setup for a mid-size luxury sedan.

Given the aces up their sleeves, what would you pick in this class?
