Stretched Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace Coming to Detroit with Room for Seven

VW clearly thinks longer and bigger is better

Arriving to meet the audience at the upcoming North American International Autos Show, the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace can accommodate up to seven occupants.

Volkswagen's press blurb mentions that the Tiguan Allspace will also launch in China and Europe, besides North America, where Wolfsburg already has a larger seven-seater going by the name of Atlas.

In fact, the "Allspace" label will differentiate the longer Tiguan from the regular one only in Europe, while in China and North America the crossover will be simply called Tiguan. This means the small Tiguan won't set foot in China or North America.

The seven-seat arrangement is possible due to an 11 cm (110 mm) increase in wheelbase which takes the tally to north of 271 cm (2,714 mm, to be more precise).

However, the additional row of seats will more likely be suitable for holding children rather than full-size adults.

Drivetrain-wise, the stretched Tiguan will likely offer both FWD and AWD through VW's 4Motion setup just like the five-seater model, while the entire engine lineup should be carried on as well.

The logical transmission choice in the US and China would be VW's double-clutch DSG unit, but Europe might get a manual version.

In any case, we'll know more next month when NAIAS 2017 kicks off in Detroit.
