Tesla Drops P90D from Design Studio, Makes Up with Glass Roof Option for the Model S

P100D is so prolific that P90D became obsolete

Tesla's IT guys were busy last night changing things up inside the brand's Design Studio feature.

As a result, the Model S/Model X in P90D interpretation are no more, but clients can now fit the Model S electric sedan with an optional Glass Roof.

Recommended by Tesla for those looking for an "open, expansive cabin feel," the feature is available as an upgrade – for a $1,500 fee – and resembles those used by the Model 3 and Model X EVs. Additionally, the Model S can be had with a sunroof (required for roof rack and satellite radio compatibility) for $2,000.

The second change saw the P90D discontinued from both the Model S and Model X range. With the 90 kWh version out of the landscape, the vacant seat goes to the P100D and its 100 kWh battery pack.

Therefore, those who select the 90D tile in Tesla's Design Studio will get a message saying "Max out your Tesla." When clicked, it will redirect buyers to the P100D upgrade.

With this move, Elon Musk is probably looking to capitalize on the huge popularity surge for the P100D, especially in the drag racing ranks around the United States, despite the fact that it costs a pretty penny.

According to Teslarati, the company's sales rationale revolves around clients buying expensive Tesla products which subsequently sustain the development of cheaper pieces of tech. Hint: the Model 3.

"Without customers willing to buy the expensive Model S and X, we would be unable to fund the smaller, more affordable Model 3 development."
