This is what 2018 BMW M8 sounds like

Spoiler alert: it probably uses a development of the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and will probably come with AWD

Almost immediately after showing photos of the production-previewing BMW 8-Series concept, the automaker has shown a prototype of the hottest version of that car, the upcoming M8. It was shown all camo’d up at the Nurburgring 24 hour race where it made quite a stir partly because it was an M8, but mostly because it sounded like it was farting fire crackers.

The source of that monumental racket is most likely the now tried and true 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, in this application expected to make at least 600 hp, possibly more. Drive is also probably not going to go exclusively to the rear wheels, as the M8 will most likely use the new all-wheel drive system developed by BMW which allows for either equal power distribution front to rear, or 100 percent of the power to go to the back.

What we’re not so sure of is the sounds – yes, it’s loud and brash, but perhaps a bit too much so. You can’t really hear the engine, as the whole audible experience seems dominated by the savage exhaust – granted, it must have had its valves fully open or something, because the production car can’t sound like that all the time.
