VW I.D. Buzz concept will turn into a production model, VW boss says

It’s baby steps for Volkswagen’s green ambitions

Although in their infancy, Volkswagen’s electrification plans are starting to catch some contour, although so far, we can only speak of confirmation coming from the carmaker’s CEO Herbert Diess.

Yesterday, for example, we found out the GTI badge will stay on hot hatches and that’s that, but sportier hybrids might fit under the GTE nameplate. Today, we hear Volkswagen will turn the I.D. Buzz concept into a mass-produced car.

Speaking to AutoExpress, the VW numero uno said “emotional cars are very important for the brand” and that Volkswagen’s range will comprise the microbus, which they “have recently decided to build.”

Moreover, VW has the adequate tools to bring back the Microbus courtesy of their MEB architecture that underpins the ID Buzz concept showed at this year’s Detroit Motor Show. The production model would then take the shape of an MPV and rely solely on electricity to get people from A to B.

Furthermore, if we take a look at the concept’s proportions, which are likely to be replicated by the production version, it’s easy to imagine an eight-seat cabin which could offer lounge-like modularity when needed.

All-wheel drive capabilities should come courtesy of two electric motors – each powering the axle it sits on – while maximum range could lie in the region of 300 miles (480 km). For now, these figures are pure speculation but we’ll keep you posted in case new relevant info emerges.
