Why the Chevrolet SSR is utterly unique and probably a future classic

It’s literally the world’s only folding hardtop muscle pickup

Chevrolet made the quirky looking SSR (short for Super Sport Roadster) pickup between 2003 and 2006, but it wasn’t that big a hit and ultimately phased out.

Some 24,150 units were built and when new it cost $42,000. However, sales were far under expectations, with only 9,000 examples finding homes in its first year.

With that in mind, it doesn’t seem to be that bad a vehicle and is in fact in its own way one-of-a-kind. It is the only pickup truck in the world that features an actual powered folding hardtop, one which radically transforms the look of the vehicle and occupants’ experience.

It’s also not an ugly looking thing, and while it may be somewhat excessively styled, I have no doubt we will look at it with kinder eyes in a few decades’ time. Doug DeMuro got to try one out and during his time with it he discovered a fairly lovable vehicle that genuinely deserves more (positive) attention than it receives.
