Honda Reveals US-bound 2017 Civic Hatchback with Turbo Power and Optional Manual ‘Box

Reaching dealerships this September

It's the first five-door hatchback to set foot in Honda's Civic lineup in the United States, but it brings along European-seasoned styling cues.

Say hello to the 2017 Honda Civic hatchback, a model which shares its platform with the 10th generation Civic coupé and sedan. Yet unlike Europe, the USofA can have the new Civic hatchback with only one engine choice, that of a four-cylinder 1.5-liter turbo mill with direct injection.

Power output stands at 174 hp for the LX, EX, and EX-L trims, while peak torque goes as high as 162 lb-ft. Honda US is also offering the range-topping Sport and Sport Touring trim levels, which come with more power – 180 hp – and a center-positioned high-flow exhaust, for a sexier touch, while max torque stays the same.

Depending on how performance-oriented they are, buyers can stick to the optional CVT gearbox which Honda calls 'sporty', or they can go for the optional six-speed manual transmission available on the LX, Sport, and EX trims, which is where the fun shines if you ask us.

Every 2017 Civic hatchback has a sport-tuned power steering system, electronic brake distribution together with hill start assist. However, most of the tech goodies can be unlocked on the Sport Touring version, which includes Honda's Sensing safety tech package, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto plus LED headlights as standard amenities.

Of course, hardcore fans will be eagerly anticipating the arrival of the (obviously) more enticing Type R version, scheduled to step on US soil next year and tested by DriveMag in Euro-spec earlier this year.
