The redesigned E-Class family is now complete
Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed the 2018 E-Class Cabriolet, just days before its debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
The new model marks a growth in dimensions, with a length of 4,826 mm (+123 mm), a width of 1,860 mm (74 mm), and a height of 1,428 mm (+30 mm). The track is also wider, both at the front and rear, which is said to benefit driving dynamics.
But the larger footprint first and foremost benefits the passengers sitting in the back, with legroom increasing by a significant 102 mm.
The open-top four-seater features an acoustic fabric soft top, much like the smaller C-Class and larger S-Class convertibles. Available in Dark Brown, Dark Blue, Dark Red, or Black, the roof is fully automatic. Derived from the S-Class Cabriolet, the soft top can be fully opened and closed in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h.
With the roof up, boot capacity stands at 385 liters, but it shrinks to 310 liters when the roof is open — which is not bad at all for a convertible. In addition, the 50:50-split folding rear seat enhances everyday practicality.
Cabriolet-specific optional extras include the AIRCAP electric draught-stop system and the AIRSCARF neck-level heating system that provide a more comfortable experience when driving with the roof down.
The fifth member of the E-Class family is based on the E-Class Coupé, with which it shares almost everything but the soft top. It sits 15-mm lower than the sedan with the standard Direct Control suspension, but there are two other suspension options: Dynamic Body Control (adaptive dampers), and the Air Body Control multi-chamber air suspension.
At launch, engine choices will include gasoline and diesel units, but Mercedes-Benz hasn't provided further details yet. However, there should be no changes compared to the E-Class Coupé. Some of the engines can be had with the optional 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, a first for the E-Class Cabriolet. Either way, all are linked to the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission.
