A Preview of the Upcoming 2017 Opel/Vauxhall Grandland X

Bonus: the first set of spy shots with Opel and Vauxhall’s Qashqai rival

Opel Mokka X, Crossland X, and soon the Grandland X: GM's SUV offensive in Europe is in full swing, so let's review what we know so far about the upcoming C-segment crossover from Rüsselsheim.

Seen here in a rendering courtesy of Christian Schulte and in spy shots captured during winter testing in northern Europe, the Opel/Vauxhall Grandland X has a rather familiar silhouette — that's because it's co-developed with PSA Group's Peugeot 3008.

Actually, the prototype was spotted near a PSA testing facility, which also explains the French number plates. Launching in fall 2017, the Grandland X will share the EMP2 platform with the French crossover, which means it's likely to be front-wheel-drive only. It's expected to be built in France as well, at PSA's plant in Sochaux.

The Grandland X is said to "combine the coolness of an SUV with a high level of driving dynamics," according to Opel. Like the 3008, it will offer a raised seating position, good all-round visibility, and plenty of space for luggage. Unlike the Crossland X which replaces the Meriva, the Grandland X will not replace the Zafira Tourer.

There are no details yet on the model's engine lineup, but chances are it will offer both PSA and Opel units (gasoline and diesel). Although nothing is confirmed, the Grandland X may also offer a seven-seat option like the Skoda Kodiaq, but that doesn't mean it will replace the Zafira Tourer (unlike the Crossland X which replaces the Meriva).
