All-new 2018 Lincoln Navigator: less weight, more power and luxury

The Navigator concept has made it to production without the gull-wing doors

Here it is, the all-new 2018 Lincoln Navigator, described as the brand's roomiest and most luxurious SUV ever.

The full-size luxury SUV has debuted at the New York Auto Show with sleek new looks that stay remarkably true to last year's Navigator Concept — bar the crazy gull wing doors, obviously.

Lincoln says the 2018 Navigator offers more space than any other large SUV (but doesn't provide figures), and that despite its massive footprint, it is 200 lb (91 kg) lighter than its predecessor. That's mainly due to the SUV's lighter, high-strength aluminum alloy body, which Lincoln says it also helps create a more refined ride.

On top of that, the use of laminated front and side glass contributes to the quietest Navigator ever, according to the company. Speaking of the cabin, the big SUV offers something for everyone.

There are three rows of seats (each one including storage), as well as an advanced cargo management system with an adjustable shelf behind the rear seats.

For the driver and front passenger, the new SUV offers a 12-inch configurable instrument cluster, an available Head-Up Display, standard SYNC 4 with Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as 30-way adjustable Perfect Position Seats that offer massage, heating, and cooling functionality.

Second-row passengers benefit from a separate audio and climate control, while third-row seats feature power recline capability. In addition, an available rear-seat entertainment system allows passengers to stream content wirelessly with an Android device to one of the 10-inch adjustable screens mounted on the rear of the front seats. Each screen can display individual content.

There's also an optional 20-speaker Revel Ultima audio on offer.

So what's under that big hood? A new twin-turbo V6 that makes 450 hp and works with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Navigator also comes with driving modes, but no details are available.

The list of available technologies includes speed-dependent adaptive lighting, a 360-degree camera and enhanced park assist, adaptive cruise control, and Trailer Backup Assist, among other things. So, should Cadillac and its Escalade be worried? Time and sales will tell.
