Facelifted 2018 BMW 4-Series Family Unveiled with Minor Updates

Bring a magnifying glass — you’re going to need it to spot the changes

Three years after its launch, the BMW 4-Series family sees its first facelift, although the term may be too generous as far as the styling is concerned.

While the 4-Series Coupé, Convertible, and Gran Coupé may look unchanged, BMW has given all models new LED headlights in place of the outgoing cars' xenon units (the M4 gets adaptive full-LED units instead). LED front fog lamps are now standard, while the taillights get LED technology as well.

The only other exterior changes include the refreshed air intakes, line-specific applications, a new rear apron, two new exclusive paint colors (Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange), and new alloy wheel designs.

Inside, the 4-Series family gets new electroplated detailing, chrome applications, and a high-gloss black finish for the center console. Three new upholstery colors with three new interior trim strips are added, as well as double stitching on the instrument panel.

The optional Navigation system Professional now features an interface with large tile-style control pads that BMW says it is easier to use. Another optional extra is the Multifunctional Instrument Display that offers different visualization options for all displays depending on the driving experience mode selected.

Some changes happen under the skin as well, with the 4 Series Coupé and Gran Coupé receiving a revised suspension with a stiffer set-up. BMW says the new configuration delivers sportier handling without affecting ride comfort. The automaker also claims all 4 Series models are more stable at high speeds and feature more communicative steering.

As for the powertrains, the lineup remains unchanged, given that the 4-Series had received a significant update in June 2016. In Europe, the 4-Series offers four- and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines ranging from 148 hp (150 PS) in the 418d and 322 hp (326 PS) in the 440i. There are three gasoline engines (420i, 430i, and 440i) and three diesel options (420d, 430d, and 435d xDrive). The xDrive all-wheel-drive system is optional on twelve model variants and standard on the 435d.
