Land Rover Brings 1978 Classic Range Rover to Its Former Glory

The automaker will restore a total of ten examples of the original Range Rover

Land Rover Classic will unveil a factory-restored 1978 three-door Range Rover at the Salon Rétromobile 2017 in Paris (February 8-12).

The vehicle is part of the "Reborn" program by Land Rover Classic, which allows customers the opportunity to purchase an original Range Rover directly from the automaker.

The first of ten classic Range Rovers that will be restored to factory condition is a 1978 Classic Range Rover sporting the Bahama Gold color and the 3.5-liter V8 gasoline engine (175CD type).

Despite its generous displacement and number of cylinders, the engine only delivers 132 hp at 5,000 rpm and 186 lb-ft (251 Nm) of torque at 2,500 rpm. A four-speed manual transmission sends power to all four wheels via an all-wheel-drive system with lockable central differential.

All restoration work is done using Land Rover Classic Parts to preserve the vehicle's authenticity. Now hold on to your seats, as buying a factory-restored classic Range Rover has a (steep) price: from £135,000 (approximately $171,400).

"Range Rover Reborn is a wonderful way to preserve the much sought after three-door original Range Rover from the 1970s, from period-correct colorways to interior trim and accessories."

Tim Hannig, Jaguar Land Rover Classic director

The first-generation Range Rover launched in 1970, initially in three-door configuration only. It wasn't until 1981 that Land Rover introduced the first five-door body style, which remained popular until production of the original Range Rover ended in 1996. So popular that the automaker continued to build it for two years in parallel with its successor, which is why the first-generation Range Rover received the "Classic" moniker.
