The Jeep Wrangler Pickup is taking shape

These are first shots of the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Pickup testing on public road

The return of the Jeep pickup has long been rumored, but we're getting more up-close shots of what it will look like. It's expected to be based on the long-wheelbase Wrangler Unlimited platform, with similar front-end styling and traditional Jeep styling towards the rear.

Expect a size similar to a Chevrolet Colorado or Toyota Tacoma, competing in the midsize pickup class and leaving plenty of breathing room for the Ram 1500. Like the Wrangler, the pickup will adopt more aluminum panels to save weight, while still allowing for good hauling and off-road capabilities. The 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 coupled with an 8-speed automatic is likely to be the mainstream powertrain, but a hybrid will be added later. A diesel is a question mark at this point.

Jeep is rumored to pick some historical name for the pickup, but it is still unnamed at this point. Expect to see it next year, with an on-sale date in early 2019. Be sure to also check out this Lego Jeep Wrangler.
