Volvo to Tap into Fast-Growing Compact SUV Segment with Funky XC40

The all-new model is expected to debut in autumn 2017

In May 2016, Volvo unveiled two concept vehicles that served to preview the brand's upcoming 40-series of compact models.

One of them was the Concept 40.1, the model expected to become Volvo's best-selling vehicle once it reaches production in late 2017 marketed as the XC40.

While the concept version of the XC40 looked quite production-ready, it still featured some show car details such as the cameras replacing the side mirrors and the recessed door handles.

As the above rendering from Automedia predicts, the XC40 will feature regular side mirrors and door handles — with concealed handles at the rear, just like on the show car. The shape of the body will remain very close to the concept; because why would you change something that looks that good?

According to a report from Autocar, the compact SUV will be unveiled this autumn, probably at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Going up against the BMW X1 and Audi Q3, the Volvo XC40 will be built on the carmaker's new CMA architecture, developed together with parent company Geely.

Volvo's third SUV alongside the recently revealed XC60 and the XC90, the XC40 will share the new platform with the upcoming S40 and V40, as well as a range of models from Geely's new Lynk&Co brand. The XC40 will also be sold in the United States.
