Ford Mustang Was World’s Best Selling Sports Coupe in 2015

Apparently, it was the only such vehicle to crack 100,000 annual sales

The latest and most modern Mustang, designed to appeal to a global audience, seems to have been a successful gamble for Ford. It’s unlikely people outside America would have ever considered it without the small turbo engine, improved suspension and quality, but with these alterations to the formula it’s now become the world’s best selling sports coupe for 2015.

The total sales tally says the Blue Oval shifted some 110,000 hardtop ‘Stangs in 2015, to which they add another 30,000 drop-tops. Apparently, it was the only such vehicle to crack 100,000 annual sales.

In its latest incarnation, the Mustang is available for purchase in some 140 markets, including right-hand drive ones such as the UK.

Still, even while the 2.3-liter turbo four-pot-powered examples racked up impressive sales on their own, Ford says it’s still the V8 that’s most popular worldwide.

According to Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst, “global markets have responded in a huge way. Ford Mustang was the only sports coupe in the world with more than 100,000 units registered last year. U.S. consumers have enjoyed interesting foreign sports cars for decades, so it was time for the Americans to return the favor with the worldwide launch of the new Mustang.”
