Tesla Model X Earns Flat-Folding Seats, Cargo Space Swells to 88 Cubic Feet

There’s a new practicality king among premium SUVs

Sometimes, a car's interior landscape can be the difference between success and failure more than its power or appearance. With the Model X, Tesla just took cargo space to new heights.

Take a stroll through Tesla's Design Studio page under the Model X tab, and you'll see a new second-row bench seat option, as previously asked for by the company's clientele.

Just as the website says, the new addition inside the practicality arsenal is "designed with a 60/40 split to recline separately or fold entirely flat." Also, note that the feature is only available in five-seat configuration.

The shift translates into 88 cubic feet of freed up interior storage space, which according to Teslarati, positions the Model X on top of its competitors in the premium SUV segment.

For the sake of comparison, the second best offering in terms of cargo space comes from the Volvo XC90 (85.7 cu. ft.) followed by the Audi Q7 (71.6 cu. ft.). Trailing behind are the likes of BMW X5 (66.0 cu. ft.), Volkswagen Touareg (64.0 cu. ft.) and Porsche Cayenne (62.9 cu. ft.).

Although the Design Studio doesn't say much about the new feature, we can see a manual lever positioned on the outside of the seat row. This suggests the power-tilt function initially available for the arrangement is no longer present.
