All-new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek to debut at NY Auto Show

It’s the XV that was unveiled in Geneva, but with a different name

Subaru will unveil the second-generation 2018 Crosstrek at the New York Auto Show.

As with the new Subaru XV showcased at the Geneva Motor Show last month, the Crosstrek features an evolutionary approach to design. Basically, the XV and Crosstrek are twins, with the names being different for marketing purposes.

The 2018 Crosstrek is based on the Subaru Global Platform, which is said to increase the rigidity of the body structure by over 70 percent. It rides on a 104.9-in (2,664-mm) wheelbase — 1.2-in (30.5-mm) longer than the previous Crosstrek's. The body is also 0.6-in (15.2-mm) longer and 0.9-in (22.8-mm) wider than before, which should translate into a slightly roomier cabin. Subaru says the 2018 Crosstrek offers a larger cargo area, more versatility thanks to the 60/40 split-folding rear seats and wider tailgate opening.

With a ground clearance of 8.7 inches (221 mm), the Crosstrek retains its off-road capabilities, but the center of gravity is now lower for enhanced on-road dynamics. The suspension system has been revised to improve handling as well — the double-wishbone independent rear suspension mounts its rear stabilizer bar directly to the body, resulting in improved body stiffness and stability. The standard Active Torque Vectoring and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system clearly contribute to improved road-holding capabilities.

Power comes from a revised 2.0-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine that gains direct fuel injection and other enhancements for a four hp boost to 152 hp. The 2.0i base and Premium trims come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, while the Lineartronic CVT is optional. The Limited trim gets the CVT as standard. All CVT-equipped Crosstreks now come standard with the driver-selectable X-Mode for better wheel control on slippery surfaces and steep inclines.

Subaru will bring the 2018 Crosstrek in dealerships this summer, with the crossover offering three grades: 2.0i base, Premium, and Limited.
